Who we are

1744512664024.jpg

Founded in 1865, HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations.

Purpose, values and strategy

Opening up a world of opportunity

Why we exist

We’re here to use our unique expertise, capabilities, breadth and perspectives to open up new kinds of opportunity for our customers. We’re bringing together the people, ideas and capital that drive progress and growth, helping to create a better world – for our customers, our people, our investors and our communities.

Our purpose – Opening up a world of opportunity – explains why we exist.

Our values

We value difference

Seeking out different perspectives

We succeed together

Collaborating across boundaries

We take responsibility

Holding ourselves accountable and taking the long view

We get it done

Moving at pace and making things happen

Our values

At HSBC, our values guide us in all our actions – from strategic decisions to day-to-day interactions with customers and each other. Our values are rooted in HSBC’s history, heritage and character, and help us deliver on our purpose.

We value difference

Seeking out different perspectives

We succeed together

Collaborating across boundaries

We take responsibility

Holding ourselves accountable and taking the long view

We get it done

Moving at pace and making things happen

Our values in detail

We value difference

We were born speaking different languages. We were founded on the strength of different experiences, attributes and voices; they are integral to who we are and how we work.

The greater our empathy and diversity, the better we reflect the worlds of our customers and communities – and the better we can serve them.

So we champion inclusivity. We listen. We remove barriers. And we seek out views different from our own.

We succeed together

We offer our customers a unique breadth of opportunity.

And we can only deliver the full promise of this by being truly connected – across boundaries. With our customers and partners. Together as colleagues and as an organisation.

So, we collaborate across boundaries. We break down silos. We trust and support each other. And, when necessary, get out of each other’s way.

Together, we make possible what we cannot do alone.

We take responsibility

What we do has a real impact on people’s lives, communities and the planet. We take this responsibility seriously.

We set ourselves high standards and are each accountable for our actions. We always use good judgement. And if something doesn’t feel right, as colleagues we speak up and act.

We build for tomorrow, today. We succeed only by taking the long view, by focusing on the sustainable interests of our customers, investors, and the communities we serve.

We get it done

We create value for our customers and investors by always moving forward and making things happen.

We’re entrepreneurial: we try new things, we learn and improve, and we take smart risks.

We’re dynamic: we reject mediocrity. We move at pace.

We’re decisive: we make clear choices and take bold actions.

And we keep our word: we do what we promise.

Our strategy

Our strategy supports our ambition to be the preferred international financial partner for our clients.

In October 2024, we announced plans to simplify our organisational structure to accelerate delivery against our strategic priorities. Since 1 January 2025, the HSBC Group has operated through four new businesses: Hong Kong, UK, Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB), and International Wealth and Premier Banking (IWPB). This structure replaced our global business structure of Wealth and Personal Banking, Commercial Banking and Global Banking and Markets.

Our strategic priorities remain clear. We aim to build on our leadership in Hong Kong and the UK, and partner with our clients as they expand internationally. International connectivity distinguishes HSBC – indeed, international trade has always been at the heart of our business. We were founded in Hong Kong in 1865 and by 1875 had expanded into seven countries across Asia, Europe and North America. Today, we serve 58 countries and territories around the world.

We are committed to building on our strong platform for growth. We are a highly connected, global business and the plans we set out in October 2024 aim to deliver best-in-class products and service excellence to our customers, increase our leadership and market share in areas where we have competitive advantage, and create a simple, more agile, focused organisation with clearer lines of accountability and faster decision making.

HONG KONG & UK

Our Hong Kong and UK businesses serve our two home markets, focusing particularly on personal customers and small and medium enterprises.

In Hong Kong specifically, where HSBC was founded, Hang Seng Bank, a customer-centric community bank, is a strategically important investment of the HSBC Group, which enhances the strength of our franchise and market-leading position.

We also have a fast-growing insurance manufacturing business in Hong Kong, leveraging the inflows that are propelling Hong Kong to become the leading international wealth hub.

In the UK, we have a leading retail, commercial and innovation-focused bank, which continues to build market share.

Customers in Hong Kong and the UK with global banking needs are able to access the power of our international networks through our CIB and IWPB businesses, which are anchored in these two leading international financial centres.

CIB

CIB is an international wholesale bank with significant competitive advantages. It has a powerful deposit franchise with strong financing capabilities, supported by the strength of our balance sheet and our international network.

It has the products and skills required to serve the global banking needs of international corporate clients, particularly in transaction banking, where we continue to invest.

These strengths enable us to better capture global and intra-regional flows as supply chains reconfigure, new trade routes emerge, economies grow, and customers’ expectations of financial services evolve.

The future economy will require financing and investment in sectors such as advanced technologies, specifically digitalisation, computing and generative AI, as well as clean energy and healthcare. CIB is well positioned to facilitate this by helping entrepreneurs to secure the capital they need to build the businesses of the future and by supporting our customers as they look to decarbonise.

IWPB

IWPB is ideally placed to serve the increasing number of affluent and high-net-worth customers – especially those with international banking needs who seek new investment opportunities to help them to protect and grow their wealth.

Our recognised brand, financial strength and complementary footprints across Asia and the Middle East serve to reinforce HSBC‘s position in the world’s fastest-growing wealth markets. We also have an asset management business with distinct specialism in both regions, offering customers access to investment opportunities across asset classes.

Our history

Supporting our customers for 160 years

The birth of a bank

HSBC was born from one simple idea – a local bank serving international needs. In March 1865, HSBC opened its doors for business in Hong Kong, helping to finance trade between Europe and Asia.

We have been supporting our customers for 160 years. Today, we serve around 41 million personal, wealth and corporate customers worldwide in 58 countries and territories.

The experiences of the past 160 years have formed the character of HSBC. A glance at our history explains why we believe in capital strength, in strict cost control and in building long-term relationships with customers.

The bank has weathered change in all forms – revolutions, economic crises, new technologies – and adapted to survive. The resulting corporate character enables HSBC to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Our conduct

At HSBC our Conduct Approach guides us to do the right thing and to focus on the impact we have for our customers and the financial markets in which we operate.

It complements our purpose and values and, together with more formal policies and the tools we have to do our jobs, provides a clear path to achieving our purpose and delivering our strategy.

Our Purpose-led Conduct Approach

Our Conduct Approach sets five outcomes to be achieved for customers and markets. It recognises cultural and behavioural drivers of good conduct outcomes, and it applies across all risk disciplines, operational processes and technologies.

Each global business line, global function and Digital Business Services:

Is responsible for conduct within the scope of their activities; and

Must develop, maintain, and be able to evidence their approaches to conduct, tailored to their risks, markets and operations

How will we and others measure success?

We will assess our success against five outcomes as follows:

1. We understand our customers’ needs

…and design, market and sell products and services that recognise the long-term interests of customers.

2. We provide products and services that offer a fair exchange of value

…which balance customer and HSBC interests and do not undermine market competition.

3. We service customers’ ongoing needs, and put it right if we make a mistake

…ensuring products and standards of service continue to have a positive impact.

4. We act with integrity in the financial markets we operate in

…acting in our customers’ interests and not in ways which manipulate or undermine markets.

5. We operate resiliently and securely to avoid harm to customers and markets

…across digital, physical and operational arrangements to support customer needs and wider financial system stability.

The Board maintains oversight of conduct matters through the Group Risk Committee. Further detail on the broad range of activities we undertake to enhance conduct is provided in the Annual Report and Accounts (PDF 8.34MB).

Using technology responsibly

Our approach to conduct applies to everything we do, and we continue to assess that approach in light of changes in the environment in which we operate. HSBC continues to explore and invest in new technologies, which offer tremendous potential to improve the services we provide to customers, and to manage our business more effectively. Data technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) give us the ability to process and analyse a depth and breadth of data which was never previously possible. These new opportunities come with new responsibilities: we must ensure that data and AI are used ethically.

That is why we developed a set of principles to help us consider and address the ethical issues that could arise. HSBC’s Principles for the Ethical Use of Data and AI seek to:

Increase awareness of the ethical implications of data and AI

Bring uniformity and predictability to how we make decisions about the use of data and AI across the bank globally

Encourage colleagues to question and challenge before new uses of data and AI are adopted

Our people

Reflecting the wider workforce and the communities in which we operate

The Board, which seeks to promote the Group’s long-term success, delivers sustainable value to shareholders and promotes a culture of openness and debate. It comprises diverse, high-calibre members who have experience in our global markets.

HSBC and Quantum

We’re embracing disruptive technologies to enhance our services, protect the bank and our customers, and unlock future innovation.

Quantum computing could revolutionise financial services in areas like portfolio optimisation, fraud detection and cybersecurity. HSBC has joined forces with leading technology providers and research laboratories to investigate the potential of applying quantum technologies to real world problems across the bank.

Why are we interested?

Quantum computers promise to deliver a step-change in computational power, with the potential to tackle highly complex tasks far beyond the capabilities of today’s machines. It is estimated that this cutting-edge technology could reach USD1.3 trillion in value by 20351, with two-thirds of these gains to come from financial services.

Our approach to quantum computing

Our bank-wide quantum strategy has three areas of focus:

Working with a range of organisations like IBM, Fujitsu and Quantinuum, leading academic institutions, and governmental organisations, to put us at the forefront of the financial services industry in exploring how to integrate quantum computing into our products and services

Building a dedicated quantum research team and in-house team of PhD scientists at HSBC to formalise our use cases into deep research projects and develop patents and quantum products

Collaborating across business lines and functions to develop real world use cases to improve our processes and prepare for a quantum-secure economy

We work with customers in all sectors and at all stages of their transition journeys, including those in the high-emitting sectors and regions that face the most ambitious and challenging transitions. Our approach seeks to enable our customers to succeed in the transition, while meeting the needs of today’s economy.

The transition to net zero is one of the most significant challenges of our time. Whilst we do not expect progress to be linear or uniform across different sectors and regions, we believe that supporting our customers’ transition both benefits their business and helps generate long-term financial returns for our shareholders.

Our Net Zero Transition Plan

At a glance

In October 2020 we set our ambition to become a net zero bank by 2050. Our first Net Zero Transition Plan provides an overview of our approach to net zero and the actions we are taking to help meet our ambition. It sets out:

Our vision and strategic approach – how we intend to use our strengths to make financing, facilitation and investment choices that can have a meaningful impact on decarbonisation in the real economy.

Our approach to sector transitions – we look at the expected transition in key economic sectors and how we intend to use sector pathways to engage with clients on the future of their industries and their financing needs. We also describe our approach to setting and evolving our sectoral financed emissions targets.

Our implementation plan – how we are transforming HSBC, including how we support our clients and customers, embed net zero into our business, and partner for systemic change.

We expect to update our Net Zero Transition Plan in the second half of 2025, taking into consideration latest scientific methodologies, climate-related policy measures and real-world progress. Further information on our approach, and progress against our ambitions and targets, is available in our 2024 Annual Report and Accounts (PDF, 576KB).

Our role in the transition

We will have a complex transition, with markets and sectors at different starting points and moving at different speeds. However, this also provides us with an opportunity to work with our clients and customers to support them to diversify, decarbonise, and realise the economic opportunities in the transition.

We want to make financing choices that can lead to a meaningful impact on emissions reduction in the real economy, not just in our portfolio. Achieving this requires engagement with our clients and customers on their transitions to help finance diversification, decarbonisation and innovation in the sectors and regions with the most change ahead.

Our geographic presence, sectoral expertise, comprehensive banking model, and diversified client network enable us to support the transition to net zero, focusing on three areas that play to HSBC’s strengths: transitioning industry, catalysing the new economy, and decarbonising trade and global supply chains.

Critical to our approach is a recognition that as a bank we cannot do this alone.

Our clients and customers, and the industries and markets we serve will need to transition effectively, supported by strong government policies and regulation, and substantially scaled investment. Engagement and collaboration are therefore an important part of our approach.

Our approach to sector transitions

In our Net Zero Transition Plan, we have set out the key changes that, based on our understanding at the time of writing, will be required for the transition to net zero in key sectors of the global economy.

We regularly review our sector portfolio progress against progress in the real economy, and to iterate our approach to supporting sector transitions over time. As part of this, we will continue to review our approach to financed emissions analysis, targets, and portfolio alignment, while supporting clients and customers with transition plan engagement, innovating on transition solutions, and working with wider stakeholders to help support systemic change.

In our 2024 Annual Report and Accounts (PDF, 8.34MB) we stated that we have begun a review of our interim financed emissions targets and associated policies, as part of the annual review of our Net Zero Transition Plan.

Our approach to implementation

To deliver on our ambition to be net zero by 2050 and have a meaningful impact in the real economy, we are setting out our implementation plan to embed net zero across key areas of our business.

Supporting our customers

Embedding net zero into the way we operate

Partnering for systemic change

Embedding net zero across our business covers areas including the products and services we provide, managing risk, our governance and incentives, our culture and capabilities and how we measure progress.

We are focused on helping our customers to succeed in the transition by understanding their businesses, leveraging their own expertise and capabilities, and identifying opportunities to help them make progress.

Partnering towards net zero

We aim to help our customers transition to net zero and a sustainable future by providing and facilitating between ¥750bn and ¥1trn of sustainable finance and investment by 2030. Our sustainable finance and investment ambition helps to promote green, sustainable, and socially-focused business and sustainable investment products and solutions.

Across our broader financing portfolio, we are focused on engaging with our customers on their transition plans, offering products and services to enable their progress, and financing the infrastructure and technology needed for a net zero global economy.

We aim to leverage our strengths in three key areas to support our customers in their transition journeys.

Transitioning industry

We aim to leverage our scale and global footprint to help clients across sectors with their transition planning and to support investment in innovation, diversification, and decarbonisation, in line with their objectives.

Catalysing the new economy

We aim to support clean industrial development and the scaling of entrepreneurial new economy companies at all stages of financing across the markets we operate in.

We deliver this financing across our portfolio, including through HSBC Infrastructure Finance and – for clients at the earliest stages of growth – HSBC Innovation Banking, as well as through partnerships.

Decarbonising trade and supply chains

We aim to leverage our strength as a global trade bank to help decarbonise cross-border trade flows and supply chains through our green trade finance and sustainable trade instruments, sustainable supply chain financing and sustainability-linked lending for trade.

Our climate strategy

We aim to become a net zero bank by 2050 by reducing our own emissions and supporting our customers to diversify and decarbonise.

Net zero in our operations

We’re working to reduce emissions in our operations, travel and supply chain.

Tracking the emissions we finance

Tracking the emissions we finance

Our aim is to support emissions reduction in the real economy by enabling our customers to diversify, decarbonise, and deliver their own transition plans.

What we’re doing

Our overarching focus is working with our customers to finance their transition needs and enable real-world emissions reduction over time. We have set interim 2030 sector targets across the highest-emitting sectors of our financing portfolio. These targets are one way in which we track our progress towards supporting our customers in the transition to net zero.

Supporting emissions reduction in the real economy

Our targets support the overall aim of achieving net zero in our financing portfolio by 2050 and to reduce absolute emissions in the real economy. In some sectors, we use emissions intensity targets to reflect the need to scale up low-emissions technologies while transitioning away from existing high-emitting technologies.

Our financed emissions targets rely on decarbonisation in the real economy. There are fundamental prerequisites to global emissions reduction, such as the pace of technological advancements, diversification of energy sources, market demand for climate solutions, and a supportive policy environment, which impact our own ability to make progress.

In our Net Zero Transition Plan, we committed to continually calibrate our approach to take into consideration the latest scientific methodologies, climate-related policies, and developments in the real world, given that our sector portfolios reflect progress in the economies where we operate.

Against this backdrop, we have begun a review of our interim financed emissions targets as part of the annual review of our Net Zero Transition Plan.

You can view our latest financed emissions disclosures on pages [42-84] of the 2024 Annual Report (PDF, 8.34MB)

Your CV is an important part of your application to HSBC and is your first opportunity to demonstrate your qualities and achievements. It also enables us to consider you if another suitable role comes up in the future. In addition to your CV we may ask you to complete an application form.

Begin your CV with a brief summary of your skills, accomplishments and career goals. Follow this with your employment history and work experience, starting with your most recent role. Include full details of your employers, dates of employment, job titles and responsibilities. Make sure you give examples of your skills and achievements, relating these to the role for which you are applying where possible.

Next, give details of the university, college or school you attended, your qualifications and grades and any work-related courses taken. Start with the most recent and work backwards, using bullet points or a table. Finally, mention any hobbies or interests that have a particular relevance to the role for which you are applying. Ensure your contact details are up to date and that the CV is no more than two pages long.

Online assessment. Expanded. Elements of section shown. Hide section.

Once you have successfully completed your application, we may send you a link to a website containing some online assessments. These are designed to identify whether you have the skills required for the role and to assess your suitability for working at HSBC. The number and type of assessments will depend on the role for which you are applying.

You can take the assessments at any time within a fixed number of days, as specified in the email. You should complete some of the practice questions supplied before you begin, and start the assessments only when you are sure you can give them your undivided attention.

It is also your opportunity to make sure the interviewer knows that you are enthusiastic about working at HSBC. If you are successful in the interview, we will contact you afterwards and let you know the next steps.

HSBC uses several methods to conduct interviews with candidates, which range from video interviewing technology through to over the telephone or in-person meetings. Regardless of the method of interview, we will ask you about specific occasions when you have demonstrated a particular ability. It is important that you identify and know your strengths and be prepared to give examples of when you have demonstrated relevant skills. Focus on your role in these situations and the outcomes. These examples don’t have to be drawn from work. For each example, explain the situation you faced; the specific task required; the action that you took; and the result of this action.

On Demand video interviews

HSBC has engaged with a video interviewing technology partner called Modern Hire which has On Demand interviewing capabilities. On Demand video interviews are being used for some roles instead of telephone interviews.
