They are comparable in level, but the platform support, review direction, and career paths are totally different, so choosing the right track can be more important than polishing your application materials.
Overseas Young Scientists Program | Based in universities
Suitable for: Those aiming to become PIs in universities, focusing on basic research and academic output.
Pros: Complete academic ecosystem, can admit graduate students.
Cons: Translating results to practical applications isn’t the core of the review.
Strict requirement: Must be under 40 years old, born on or after January 1, 1987, with at least 36 consecutive months of overseas research experience.
Torch Program (Talent Channel, industry nickname) | Based in key laboratories or Chinese Academy of Sciences institutes
Suitable for: Those who want to work on major national research platforms, do cutting-edge research, and value technology commercialization.
Pros: Top-tier equipment in large scientific facilities and key labs; evaluation balances research and industrialization.
Cons: Positions are scarce, few slots open to outsiders; official policy documents are limited, so it’s harder to get information.
Qiming Program | Based in enterprises (private, local state-owned, or branch of central SOEs)
Suitable for: Those targeting industrial tech work or entrepreneurship within an enterprise system.
Pros: No defense required, don’t need to return full-time during application, higher salary ceiling.
Cons: Less academic freedom compared to universities or key labs.
Practical tips:
1.First, determine your future full-time job platform—university, national research platform, or enterprise—then focus on the corresponding talent program.
2.The three programs are mutually exclusive in the same year; don’t prepare for multiple tracks to avoid immediate disqualification.
3.Connect with host institutions 6–12 months in advance; slots at key labs and top universities are highly competitive.
