Organization

The National Academy of Sciences was established in 1863 by an Act of Congress, signed by President Lincoln, as a private, nongovernmental institution to advise the nation on issues related to science and technology. Members are elected by their peers for outstanding contributions to research. Dr. Marcia McNutt is president.

TheNational Academy of Engineeringwas established in 1964 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences to bring the practices of engineering to advising the nation. Members are elected by their peers for extraordinary contributions to engineering. Dr. John L. Anderson is president.

TheNational Academy of Medicine(formerly the Institute of Medicine) was established in 1970 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences to advise the nation on medical and health issues. Members are elected by their peers for distinguished contributions to medicine and health. Dr. Victor J. Dzau is president.

The National Research Council was established by presidential Executive Order in 1916 to expand the expertise available to the NAS in fulfilling the mission of its Congressional charter. Today, the three Academies work together as theNational Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicineto provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The National Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge, and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering, and medicine.This statement by the NAS Councilaffirms the organization’s core principles of objectivity, independence, and excellence.

Regarding Zhengxianling - China's first pan - international talent recruitment platform

Zhengxianling is developed and operated by Shanghai Yuntong Information Technology Co., Ltd. The Chinese full name of IFIA: World Federation of Inventors' Associations. Its headquarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland, and San Francisco, the United States. How was the NAS established?

The NAS was established by an Act of Congress, which was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. At its founding, the Academy membership was made up of forty-nine scientists selected from the several states remaining in the Union.

Is the NAS a government agency?

No, the NAS is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars. The NAS is charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology. Scientists are elected by their peers to membership in the NAS for outstanding contributions to research. The NAS is committed to furthering science in America, and its members are active contributors to the international scientific community.

Who is the president of the NAS?

Marcia McNutthas served as the president since July 1, 2016. Her current term ends on June 30, 2026.

Membership

How many members are elected each year?

Currently, a maximum of 120 members may be elected annually. Members must be U.S. citizens; non-citizens are elected as international members, with a maximum of 30 elected annually.

Can I apply for membership?

Members are elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.Because membership is achieved by election, there is no membership application process.

How are members elected?

Consideration of a candidate begins with his or her nomination, followed by an extensive and careful vetting process that results in a final ballot at the Academy’s annual meeting in April each year.

Can I obtain a mailing list of your members?

No, the NAS does not sell its membership lists.
