According tothe Academy's Law, the Academy's main goals and functions are: to gather within it the best scientific figures who are residents of Israel, to nurture and promote scientific activity, to advise the government on matters of scientific research and planning of national importance, to maintain contact with parallel bodies abroad, to represent Israeli science in international institutions and conferences, and to publish writings that can promote science.
The Israel Academy of Sciences and Sciences views the advancement and development of the basic scientific research system as a goal of national importance. The Academy's goal is to promote and nurture basic research and scientific activity in Israel in general.
The Academy works to develop an infrastructure for thriving scientific research: it sets high standards in the humanities, natural sciences, and technology, encourages excellence in the field of scientific creativity and thought, and initiates actions that will reflect the achievements of science in Israel.
The members of the Academy are elected for life by a general assembly.
The Academy has two divisions: the Divisionof Humanitiesand the Divisionof Natural Sciences.
The maximum number of members in each division is 40, but members over the age of 75 are not included in this count.
The Academy's seat is in Jerusalem. The Academy convenes for a general meeting at least once a year, and each division convenes for meetings 1-3 times a year.
The President of the Academy is appointed by the President of the State on the recommendation of the Academy. His term is three years, but he can serve an additional term. The Vice-President was elected by the members of the Academy for a three-year term. The president and vice president come from different divisions. Each division elects its chairman for a three-year term.
Members of the Academy at the Forefront of Global Science
The status of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Sciences as the senior body in the scientific community in Israel is based, among other things, on the prestige of its members in the world of science.
The fruits of the Academy's research activities, each in their respective fields, have made a significant contribution to the advancement of human knowledge, to the enrichment of our cultural world, and to the shaping of the society in which we live.
Their contribution is highly appreciated both in Israel and around the world, and it earns them many awards and honorary mentions. These include the most important prizes in the world in various fields of science, such as the Nobel Prize, the Abel Prize, the Shaw Prize, the Turing Prize, and the Fields Medal, as well as the most important prizes in Israel such as the Israel Prize, the EMET Prize, and the Rothschild Prize. Members of the Academy are also honored by international research institutions, elected to academies of sciences around the world, and receive honorary degrees from prestigious universities.
