Our values
At Shell, we share a set of core values – honesty, integrity and respect for people – which underpin all the work we do. The Shell General Business Principles, Code of Conduct and Ethics and Compliance Manual help everyone at Shell act in line with these values and comply with relevant laws and regulations.
Respect
Respect
Our people have the opportunity to progress irrespective of gender, ethnicity, or other differences.
Honesty
Staff and business partners are encouraged to speak up and celebrate those who do the right thing.
Integrity
By committing to our policies and rules, we empower our staff and business partners to make the right decisions.
How we conduct our business
The Shell General Business Principles are central to how we conduct our business and living by them is crucial to our continued success. We are judged by how we act and how we live up to our core values of honesty, integrity and respect for people. Our Business Principles are based on these. They promote trust, openness, teamwork and professionalism, as well as pride in what we do and how we conduct business.
We were one of the first global companies to state and share our beliefs when we published our General Business Principles in 1976. As part of these principles, we commit to contribute to sustainable development, balancing short and long-term interests and integrating economic, environmental and social considerations into our decision-making.
All Shell employees and contractors, and those at joint ventures we operate, are expected to understand and continually behave in line with our Business Principles. We expect suppliers, and joint ventures that we do not operate, to apply equivalent principles.

Diversity, equity and inclusion
“We've done a lot of work on DE&I in recent years. Creating the most diverse and inclusive organisation in the world will make us a much better company”
Wael Sawan, Shell CEO
Our vision is a bold one - to become one of the most diverse and inclusive organisations in the world. A place where everyone—from employees, to our customers, partners and suppliers—feels valued, respected and has a strong sense of belonging.
We’ve set this goal and embedded it in our global company strategy – Powering Progress – because it’s about who we are, it’s the right thing to do, and it will make us a stronger company. It will bring a richness of experience that will help us innovate for the future and better serve our customers, so we all thrive together. Our CEO and Executive Committee are accountable for our progress.
We hope these pages will give you the answers you’re looking for about our commitment, how we hold ourselves accountable, and achieving sustainable progress to making a meaningful difference.
Our goal sounds great, but you may be asking “what does it mean?”
It means that our inclusion strategy is about absolutely everyone. So whoever you are, and wherever you are, we want you to be free to be yourself at Shell and to contribute positively to our inclusive culture.
It means we recognise that each of us starts from a different place, and levelling the playing field for everyone means taking targeted action – starting with our four global equity focus areas (Gender, Race & Ethnicity, LGBT+ and Disability Inclusion and enABLEment).
It means we publish our roadmap and our guiding principles, which were built from hundreds of conversations with colleagues, so you know where we are today, where we want to go and how we plan to get there. We don’t have all the answers. And we’ll keep talking, listening, learning and improving our approach.
It means being transparent about our data and experiences. Much of it will be positive, some of it will show we’re heading in the right direction and some of it will demand we do more.
What we do

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies that aims to meet the world’s growing need for more and sustainable energy solutions in ways that are economically, environmentally and socially responsible.
Inside What we do
Our approach
Powering Progress sets out our strategy to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, generating value for our shareholders, our customers and wider society.
Oil and natural gas
Oil and gas will continue to play a crucial role in the energy system for several decades to come, with demand reducing gradually over time. Shell is investing in both low-carbon energy and oil and gas in a disciplined way, while finding sustainable and profitable ways to transition to net zero. This includes actions to reduce emissions from oil and gas operations.
Renewable power
Renewable power is playing an increasingly important role in the transition to net-zero emissions and in supporting energy security. Alongside providing the energy the world needs today, Shell is developing renewable power projects to provide some of the lower-carbon energy that the world will need over the years ahead.
Mobility is the shopfront and the face of Shell. At our 47,000 service stations worldwide, we interact with millions of customers every day.
Carbon capture and storage
There is no single solution to the urgent challenge of cutting carbon emissions to limit global temperature rise. Carbon capture and storage offers a way to reduce emissions from sectors that are hard-to-decarbonise. Find out more about this technology and how Shell is working to unlock its potential around the world.

Hydrogen
Shell sees great potential for the use of hydrogen in a range of sectors, from transport to industry. As governments, businesses and energy consumers continue to align on the need for net-zero emissions in the future, support for hydrogen is gathering pace.
Nature-based solutions
We are investing to protect and enhance natural ecosystems that capture CO₂ emissions, benefit local communities, and improve biodiversity. We use the carbon credits these projects generate to help customers decarbonise by compensating for their emissions.
Technology and innovation
Energy is vital to our daily lives. Over the coming decades, more people will gain access to energy and enjoy higher standards of living. At the same time, climate change remains a serious concern. We use human ingenuity, innovation and technology to unlock more, cleaner energy for the years ahead.

Our businesses
Our operations are divided into our businesses: Integrated Gas and Upstream, and Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions. Our Projects & Technology organisation manages the delivery of Shell’s major projects and drives our research and innovation.
Integrated Gas and Upstream
Integrated Gas and Upstream (IGU) explores for and extracts crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. It delivers hydrocarbon products from conventional oil and gas operations, deep-water exploration and production, liquefied natural gas (LNG) activities, and converts natural gas into gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuels and other products. The marketing, trading and optimisation of LNG are included in IGU. IGU provides the secure energy customers need and we aim to do this with lower emissions.
Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions
Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions (R&ES) provides products and services to more than 1 million business customers. It includes Chemicals and Products, and Marketing, which includes Mobility — a business that serves around 33 million retail customers a day at more than 47,000 service stations. Marketing also includes Lubricants, and Sectors and Decarbonisation activities. Downstream and R&ES, underpinned by Trading and Supply, aims to meet the evolving energy needs of our customers.
Projects & Technology
Projects & Technology (P&T) manages major projects, driving innovation, while delivering technical services to our businesses. P&T provides essential functional leadership across Shell, addressing safety and environment, contracting and procurement, and greenhouse gas emissions management. Our research and development activities also encompass safety, performance products, and automation and artificial intelligence.
